Types of Shields
There are three main types of shields available for copper cables: braid shields, foil shields, and combination shields. Each type has unique benefits that make it more suitable depending on the particular application. Here’s a closer look at each type of shield and its advantages.

Braid Shields – Braid shields are composed of multiple strands of metal wire woven together in a circular pattern. This type of shield provides excellent protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI). It also offers a degree of flexibility that allows the cable to move without breaking or fraying the shield wires.

Foil Shields – Foil Shields are made up of a single layer of aluminum or other metal foil that is wrapped around the cable core in either an overlapping or non-overlapping pattern. Foil shields provide excellent protection against EMI, but they are not as flexible as braid shields and can be more prone to damage when bent or twisted too sharply.

Combination Shields – Combination shields combine both braid and foil shielding into one cable design. The advantage here is that combination shields offer the best protection against EMI while still providing some flexibility due to the braid material used in conjunction with the foil layer. However, combination shields are also more expensive than either braid or foil shields alone since they require two separate manufacturing processes for each component part.  

Understanding which type of shield is best for your application is key when it comes to protecting your copper cables from EMI and noise interference. While all three types have their own unique advantages, most engineers will find that a combination shield offers the best balance between cost, flexibility, and performance when it comes to shielding copper cables effectively and efficiently. By considering all three types carefully before making a decision, engineers can ensure they make an informed choice about which shield works best for their needs.
