In the engineering world, copper cables come in two primary types—solid and stranded. Each has its own unique properties and uses, so it is important to understand the differences between them as well as their benefits. Let’s explore why stranded coaxial cable is a better choice for certain applications than solid copper cable.

Uses of Stranded Copper Cable
Stranded copper cables are most commonly used in applications where flexibility and vibration resistance are priorities. Examples include networking ethernet cables, automotive wiring harnesses, and audio/video cables. The flexibility of this type of cable makes it ideal for a wide range of applications where repeated movement or flexing may be common. Additionally, because of its durability and resistance to vibration, it is also frequently used in industrial settings. Solid copper cables do not offer the same level of flexibility and vibration resistance as stranded ones. Their rigid construction makes them less suitable for applications that require the cable to move or flex over time.  

Benefits of Stranded Copper Cable

Finally, their greater flexibility allows them to fit into tighter spaces when compared with solid copper wires which can be bulky and difficult to bend around tight corners or curves in confined spaces such as computer cabinets or server racks.
